My dear friend David Burge has acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and you can follow the uplifting story of his and his family's journey with leukemia here (note that you can receive updates via email by clicking on the link in the sidebar).

David lost his hair due to chemotherapy, and this led to the start of the Shave 4 Dave team, who shave in solidarity. You too can join this team - leukemia is optional.

I, being an incurable shutterbug, have been recording this process and the results are here.

Optimist(ic) sailors 4-3-09

At Kohimarama Beach I found these youngsters landing their Optimist sailing dinghies after a race.

These little yachts are 7' (2.13m) long at the waterline. I learnt to sail in one and they're a blast. I knew a guy who was 6'6" tall and he sailed one of these - it was a tight fit, because you have to sit sideways and the Optimists are only 3'8" wide. For him the hardest part was dodging the boom (the metal tube at the bottom of the sail) as it swung from one side of the boat to the other!
