The 10th of July 2010 was a beautiful, cloudless winter's day, and about 350 people gathered at the Manurewa Baptist Church in Auckland, New Zealand, to remember, honour, and (temporarily) farewell David Burge.

Dave's birthday is actually on 22 May, but it was decided to have an early party whilst he was feeling well. Dave's son Joseph turns nine on 31 May and he was also included in the early celebration.

A Week of Goodness April 2010

These photos show one performance which was part of Living Room 2010 "A Week of Goodness", a public art event held in Auckland, New Zealand. You can go to the website, but I don't know how long that link will last so I've reproduced the relevant information below.

Living Room 2010 "A Week of Goodness" is based on the 1934 book Une Semaine De Bonté By Max Ernst, which is divided into seven sections, one for each day of the week. Une Semaine de Bonté means "A Week of Kindness'.

What you are seeing here is Paula Roush conducting what I would call collaborative public art. In the photos you can see a large screen: Paula's work appears on the left and the work of another artist in Malmö, Sweden (where it was 2am) appears on the right of the screen. It's all happening live via the internet and this performance is called A field of interconnected realities.

The Auckland City Council website says

'A field of interconnected realities' is a performative installation consisting of live drawing re-enacting sections of the Semaine de Bonte book, leading to the production of an artist's publication.
Two artists in different locations collaborate through webcam in the development of an interconnected drawing inspired in revised bio-tech versions of Max Ernst's 1934 collages. Each session is performed live, mixing hand drawing with the use of sketch-a-graph, a machine that can both enlarge and reduce an image whilst copying it. The drawing performance, featuring a collaboration with artist Maria Lusitano (Malmo, Sweden), is networked with webcams and streamed live on the net and projected at Queen Elizabeth 2 Square.
After the performance the audience will be invited to participate and experiment drawing using the sketch-o-graph. Paula will do one live drawing every day for five days and from these live drawing sessions will be generated the material for a revised 'semaine de bonte' artists book.

About Paula it says

Paula Roush is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher and teacher, whose work addresses public culture and urban space.
Paula works with a city as a site of investigation and develops ways of intervening in urban space, working in the mode of public art and tactical intervention into public debate.
In 1988 she founded msdm, a platform for art research whose projects reveal her interest for mobile strategies of display and mediation, the convergence of network practices and daily life.

About Living Room 2010 "A Week Of Goodness" the website says

Celebrate the notion of giving and kindness on the streets of Auckland CBD from Friday 9 to Saturday 17 April 2010 - with an exciting programme of live performance art and moving image that brings together a talented group of local and international artists and choreographers in a programme curated by Pontus Kyander around the theme - "A Week of Goodness".

The theme uses ideas of giving and kindness as a departure point for a flight of associations, bearing in mind that every gift comes with a string attached.
Living Room is an annual Auckland City Council public art event, and the focus of this years programme has been on collaborative partnerships between artists, choreographers and dancers.
The title comes from surrealist artist Max Ernst's book of collage, 'Une semaine de bonté', published in 1936. Our re-interpretation of the theme 'A Week of Goodness' takes on board the surreal connotations of the book, but gives room for an interpretation through contemporary art practices.
What good are we providing each other as fellow humans? What good is art giving? Is kindness always something good? What darker aspects are there of what generally is perceived as something good, as goodness in man?
