In loving memory of David Burge Born 22 May 1968, fell asleep 4 July 2010.
I started this section of my website when my dear friend David Burge developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia in November 2009. Sadly Dave did not survive the leukemia, but the journey through the valley of the shadow of death made by him, his family, and his friends is recorded here and on a blog.
The story of Dave's wife Tarnya and their children continues on her blog.
The tragedy of Dave's death is overshadowed by wonderful truths that give believers comfort and encouragement...
Jesus said... I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies (John 11:25 NIV)
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words. (1 Thess 4:13-18 NIV)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16 NIV)
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away (Rev 21:1-4 NIV)
David is sleeping now (more info), and when Jesus returns he will be resurrected to etenal life. I, Dave's family, and many of his friends find that encouraging, as did Dave.
Dave and Tarnya quoted these verses while Dave was sick: ... we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Cor 4:16-18 NIV)
